Desert Islands  MAP OFFICE [Gutierrez + Portefaix]  The history of the 21st century will be written on water. When As sea levels are certainly on thecontinue to rise, the sea becomes our new desert. Paul Virilio* recently announced the “end of geography”, meaning that time (history) won over space. Time is now on the top of space, as the sea sits on the surface of the earth. For Desert Islands, the surface of the sea is fractured as it isif reflected from on the surface of 101 mirrors. Each mirror is framing frames one island and its geographical coordinates. We have selected 101 islands that present a laboratory of major human action and experimentation – utopian communitiesy, a fiscal paradise, military spheres, clandestine migrations, ecosystems, and exclusive leisure. These 101 islands serve as a new reference, not only for the desires but also the fears and secrets of our time.  The island has always been a privileged theme in cinema. Many films have portrayed the key sequence of spotting “land!,”, or the histories of piracy, castaways, drug smuggling, hidden criminal refuges, genetic experiments, and the island as a battle fields.… Echoing this tradition, wWe have produced an original film untitled Island Resort, composed of extracts from feature films and documentaries echoing referencing the island theme. Along with Similar to cinema, the island is also a space of repetition. For this new montage, we have written a scenario that will be repeated as a trilogy of the same sequence, each from a different film source. Therefore, the exhibition comprises a furnishedture Domesticated Island including that includes a seating area, a table, one exotic plant, and a small monitor that visitors can borrow use to watch one of the three Island Resort videos of Island Resort.
